Aricee Alley 2 by fox-orian Aricee Alley 2 by fox-orian
In an alternate universe I would've been an architect.
(Elsewhere, my alternate self just submitted a work claiming I'd be an illustrator in another universe.)

A speed sketch I felt like doing today to scratch an itch.

Some abstract concrete wall surrounding a public garden behind some offices.
I'm jealous of Aricee's mountainous terrain.

1.5 hours, Photoshop

In my alternate universe I would do what you do...

How ever, I am that Architect. Care to trade?

Seeing as your said this however, I would love to take a building you draw and use my knowledge and architectural prowess to make it into a real thing...

Brilliant and even though done fast, harder than it looks. I always have a tough time with perspective and this is done perfectly. I also love the lighting you did on this. Nice work! :highfive:

you definitely do better than many students i know that study architecture...
loving the darkness. the weird thing is that the sketch gives me the feel of a little street in the afternoon of a hot summer. must be the contrast and the lush trees. prolly the bokehish effect, too. anyway... love, love, love.

Illustration with architecture... How would that work? That actually sounds pretty styling. Anyway, Great work with the perspective on this one. The way you scale down detail and add atmospheric perspective really sells it.

I really love how you use your landscapes to set a mood for an image. I've seen a lot of images of landscapes, especially urban ones that were just sort of "there". But yours really make an environment and makes me feel like I'm at that place. It's definitely a skill I would like to achieve as best as I can. =)

It looks nice! When I think about it, haven't you ever tried to work in 3D? Creating the full city of Aricee in 3D would be great fun for you and you could set your camera perfectly as you wish, with the focal you want etc... With a soft cell-shading you could get quickly a nice base to work from in Photoshop.

I'm thinking about this partly for one of my teachers is working on a European style comic but all in 3D to get the perfect scene settings he wants and change them at any moment if needed.

It's nice to see some abstract shapes in here, it really makes this piece work.

It would also be nice to see those gardens sometime in the future if they're at all relevant.:D

Probably because it mostly is - simple buildings are one of the easiest things to do in digital art - you only need a few beginner level techniques and if you use them properly you get yourself a believable city scape. Drawing people/cars/clouds/smoke etc IN the city.. Thats the hard part (which fox also does well, but this piece is a lot simpler).

But really - set up a perspective grid (in this case looks like 1 point perspective) annnd start plotting your structures using shift + tapping two locations on the canvas with digitizing pen (tapping the two points with different pressures creates tapered lines and they are ALWAYS perfectly straight) then decide where your light is coming from and place shadows accordingly - with this kind of structures the light is really blocky and simplistic so that makes it that much easier.

All in all - something like this, skill wise - is very easy, the hard part is trying to figure out where you want stuff.

Yeah, pretty much.
This picture took only about 30 minutes to draw because of how simple the geometric forms are. The leaves / trees help break up that geometric monotony.

Though, notice that this piece is actually 3 point perspective. (The vertical lines are receding to a point high in the sky, and the horizontals are receding to a point far off to the right XD It's what I call a "Shallow 3-Point" scene. I prefer them over 1-point because even in something that seems like it would be 1-point will in fact still have 3 points SOMEwhere. (This piece would just not be the same if all the horizontals and verticals were snapped parallel.)
