How important is Value when making an image? I hope after viewing these examples you'd agree that a well planned value structure is very important.

While working on my Perspective & Composition Part 2 tutorial, [link] , I had to convert a number of my images to grayscale in order to talk about some aspects such as value and contrast. [I ended up not using all of them, but they were converted none the less.]

I hadn't looked at some of my work in grayscale before and I really grew attached to how different some of the images looked when compared to their color counterparts. [Especially the third image -- I actually much prefer the grayscale version of this image compared to the color one.]

I think some of you may find this interesting, especially since a large part of the Perspective & Compostion tutorial is about Value and Contrast. This is almost like a supplemental example of how it works.

I think even while working on a picture, do this every once in a while. Look at your images in grayscale -- use either a "Black & White" adjustment layer for this, or use a "Desaturate" adjustment layer. It can help you realize what you're doing with your color once the saturation is converted into value. A color that you think is bright and loud may be darker than you think.

All of the original color versions of these can be found here: [link]

Everything looks so much different in greyscale! I like it.

make a map of what you see; direct pain effectively.

If this isn't a gleaming example of perspectives, then I don't know what is! The compositions are always top notch and something to learn from most definitely! It makes it easier to see what's going on with just the tonal values in these pieces and demonstrates what you are talking about quite nicely!

Whoa, simply amazing. You're environments, and perspective are just way too good. I'd like to give you a high 5. May I? Here *HIGH FIVE*. Maybe some of your skill has rubbed onto me.

the feel in grayscale is different though familiar, I think it's a great trick indeed to check images in grayscale like this, thank you for this one more piece of advice! :) and I agree with you, the third picture looks better in grayscale, I think we feel more the textures and it gives the buildings a new presence and realism but that's my opinion.

A teacher of mine once told me, "if it works in black and white, It will work in color". It's turned out to be pretty true.

What happens in the third image is that the values are more under control in the grayscale version.
In the color version, the saturation levels are so high, that everything looks more up front than it should.

In retrospect that actually WASN'T the original idea I was going for, so I actually did a bad job on the color version.

That is very interesting.
Though hue may vary in color, they can still appear to be very bland and flat. That's when checking the values in grayscale help a lot. :]
Keep up the amazingness.
You're one of my favorite on my watch list. :D
