Artist's Comments

Just a fun little slice of life picture I decided to do on and off for the past day.

I wanted to try a full semi speed-painted scene WITHOUT using shift constraints or a ruler on my Cintiq. So I had at the picture fully freehand. I like the looser look this has compared to the exactness some of my other work has. Maia's just kinda plopped into the picture pretty lazily. I wasn't focusing on her so much, I was more interested in finishing this location hahah.

Hope you enjoy this new kind of picture from me :)

Little fact: this location was inspired by an alley I live near.

hey that's an interesting tidbit,
do people actually use real rulers on a cintiq? :P

Aphaits, with a ph and ts, i included.
:iconfox-orian:
sure you can. Any NON-METAL ruler works great on a cintiq. Transparent graphing rulers work best.

Heh, it does look a little like a few back alleys I've seen in Boston. Very nice!
:iconaphaits:
ahaha, never used a cintiq before, just started using my old wacom3 again :P
they're a bit slippery tho, i miss the scratching feeling of paper with pencil.

That was all free hand? Some of the objects (Smoke stacks, and stairs) seem pretty damn straight!

I love this so much. I feel like this scene actually exists somewhere. So you just used an inkpen-y kind of brush and inked it freehand on the cintiq? It gives it a great quality.

Did you know Wacom sells tips for their pens that are made of a compressed felt?

Those tips increase friction and provide a feeling that you're drawing on paper.

Similarly, you can also tape a piece of paper over your wacom surface and just draw on top of that. I know some people that do that with heavy sketchbook papers so they last longer.

Thats because I took my time on those details :) The drawing overall was still pretty quick, but I managed to get those lines pretty straight because I made the line THICK to start with, then used the eraser tool to straighten it up and thin it out. Yields a straight line, yet organic with flaws.
:iconfox-orian:
It ALMOST does exist somewhere hahah
I had taken a couple photos of a location near my apartment that looks seriously almost exactly like this. I used them loosely as references for the scenery.
I used the "Variable Pen" brush for almost all of this [from my brush set]
