EDIT 10.20.2008 ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
THIS TUTORIAL IS NOT INTENDED FOR OFFICIAL PRINTING,
but rather just for VIEWING ON SCREEN.
Scanned tone samples can almost never print correctly from a laser or ink jet printer. Noticeable patterning and moire can occur if you try. REAL SCREEN TONING IS ACHIEVED BY BITMAP HALF TONING.

Thus!

SEE THE NEW, EASIER, MORE ACCURATE TUTORIAL HERE: [link]

ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

An all-new, better to understand tutorial of the original screentoning lesson I had written a year or more ago.
All the text is in the image.

DOWNLOADABLE ZIP CONTAINS: Hundreds of actual screentone samples for you to use in photoshop and this tutorial image for instrctions.
ZIP size is roughly 15 MB's.
If you find new screentone swatches on the internet, please allow this screentone database to expand! Send me a note with links to the swatch images and I'll add them to this ZIP! Thanks!

~ Enjoy!

--- Hey, if you create an artwork using this technique, do a favor and show me! I'm interested to see your results.

EDIT: August 19th 2008
Some users have been wondering how some swatches containing partially incomplete patterns are usable in Photoshop. The truth is, they are not usable. The key point of this tutorial is to get you to think about how Photoshop can be used to complete this type of work differently. I supply some sample patterns just to get you started and to understand the concept of what I show here, but I make no guarantee that all of these patterns are all you will ever need. The limitations of the Pattern Maker software can't make heads or tails of the smaller partial patterns such as the background textures, so you will never be able to get a seamless tiling sample out of them. What I do encourage you to do in this tutorial is to buy screentones you may want to use in a project and scan them before using them in real life. This way you end up having very large, high quality digital copies of the screen tones you buy ready to be used digitally -- it's like the money you spent for them lives on forever! The sample patterns supplied with this tutorial are only what they are -- SAMPLES. You can get some things done with these samples, but I would also be stealing business from the companies that make the tones!

This was an awesome big help!! :glomp: I've been wanting to embark on a manga project but the screentoning was one of the biggest things holding me back. I'm still learning photoshop (and I should probably learn how to work with masks XD). Well, your tutorial made me brave enough to try and work on screentoning a Princess Ai fanart I started. I think it's still sloppy in areas and still plan to work on it more... (if you have any extra tips for it, please tell! I want to submit it to tokyopop for their fanart submissions). --> [link] <-- Thanks again for the tutorial and files for the screentones! :)
