NOTE: These star ratings are pit only against each other relatively, not every app on the market!
I keep seeing lots of debates about what program should be used for what. This is different than the Filetype tutorial I did, where this is dealing with the type of work being done, versus export purpose.
I’m not claiming this chart I made is gospel, but it should give a pretty good idea on what the strengths are of each particular program are based on some basic needs and parameters.
This chart should also help you determine what program is best to buy if you’re looking to purchase one for things you want to do. For instance, SAI is cheap and can do most drawing/painting needs, but not type or design. Photoshop is an all-around great performer, but is the most expensive program of the lot. Manga Studio can handle more things than SAI, but only about averagely so. Hope this makes sense of things for you!
(Of course, your mileage may vary on these ratings.)
WHERE'S GIMP????????? (or --other program here--) I've never ever used Gimp before. I have no professional experience or informed opinion on the program. Thus, I will not list it here since I have no history with it. On the plus side, Gimp is free -- so why don't you go give it a try and see for yourself? You have nothing to lose!
Can someone please give me the link to download the newest version of SAI? I looked online for it, but all I could find was this really old version that worked like shit. :/
You know i was using SAI until i had to use the circle selection and i noticed SAI doesnt have that tool!!!! I am really disappointed that SAI doesnt have such a baaaaaaaaaaaaasic tool!
Sai works on my Mac! Look up Painttool Sai for Mac! It has some glitches, but they can be worked around, except maybe pen pressure. That's definitely hindering...
I only have Photoshop CS6 and Sketchbook express. I used those respectively and I like how they can work together. I usually draw either traditionally or on sketchbook express and color in photoshop. I tried painter before as a demo and I really do love the painting options, but for me photoshop has a great custom brushes system and it was easier for me to jump into more-so than painter. Oddly enough right? lol
