Ropeburn by fox-orian Ropeburn by fox-orian
Rewritten description, April 2013:
I study from the Mirror's Edge level "Ropeburn." Plopped Maia in here for the hell of it.
This game taught me the concept of "light bleeding."

Believe it or not, this was drawn on paper first. When's the last time I ever did that?

Hey, I was reading your description and I'm trying to get more into backgrounds so when I saw that you were taught about light bleeding, I was intrigued to understand what that was, but when I looked it up online, I got a lot of strange results haha

I was wondering if you could explain this to me or point me in the direction of someone who has explained it c:
I love your art by the way. c: so beautiful. The atmospheres you give make these drawings so real and yet so dream-like.

Hey sorry for the late response -- I think my teminology was a bit off in the description. There are a lot of functions of light that are easy to overlook. Light bleeding is the transference of color from one surface onto another due to reflected light carrying the tone. (The yellow tone of the walls turning the shadow on the white floor a yellow/orange tone, for example.) Then you have ambient occlusion, which is objects blocking light from reflecting -- causing a darkened area. (Look this up to see what I mean.) Some people use 3D terms like Global Illumination, Radiosity, Light Bouncing, etc. You can learn a lot from 3D modelling functions of light :D

Wow, that colour temperature and lighting is really believable. I nearly yelled at her to get out of the sun before she faints

The influence of the game Mirror's Edge on your scenarios is huge - and I like it. Mirror's Edge was one of the first XBOX 360 game that I decided (after Cliver Barker's JERICHO, Gears of War and Dark Sector). Plus I like an addendum to your project SYNTHESIS. Keep it up

as soon as i saw the area where the female was sitting, it noticed it was oddly familiar to mirrors edge.

It's hard to explain why, but I absolutely adore the shading in this. The colours are amazing, too. You've really captured the atmosphere perfectly.

kinda annoys me that this isn't actually a Mirror's Edge Sequel, and is just inspired by it :(

i love your neat lines and your style brings a sense of simplicity yet it is intricate.

Lovely colouring here too.

My favourite part has got to be your composition and bringing story into the picture. I can almost feel the ambience and hear the sounds >w<

Before reading your comment, I thought how much this work reminded me of Mirrors Edge. I was (and still am) also interested in how light reflects off surfaces. You did the pic justice, Fox! I believe you succeeded in your experiment.

As for the pic, I like how Maia is just chillin out and reading. Great position you put her in.

That's amazing. Can you recommend any books that deal with these kinds of light and color concepts? Our art department was a total bust so I'm trying to supplement with my own reading...

I love this serie. The ambience is incredible, perspectives, illuminations, the lines ... Mirror's Edge is a very good reference, It left me very good feeling the ambience of the game. These illustrations convey life ^^!

your paintings have this uplifting feeling of a more vivid reality... but still reality, and not a dream, due to the excellent perspectives even at weird angles. :)

'I referenced a location from Mirror's Edge to learn how Light Transport & Ambient Occlusion works.'

Wonderful. Give yourself a pat on the back for having this idea.

Nice to know im not the only one who does this kinda thing, though, I've not gone as far as to study lighting yet, not from a game anyways :p.
fox-orian Featured By Owner Feb 26, 2010  Professional Digital Artist
The odd thing about Mirror's Edge is that its lighting is completely accurate.
This is because unlike many other games, Mirror's Edge has practically NO dynamic light sources whatsoever.
All of the shadows and lighting were precomputed through raytracing [so they're all textured... hence why the shadows are SLIGHTLY blurry due to the texture resolution] BUT the light transport, radiosity, color bleeding, etc are all completely accurate, which is why I found it to be such a good game to study.

I'm just sure these days not to study it without completely LOOKING like Mirror's Edge.
