This was a study on a background from Samurai Jack by Scott Wills.
I tried to reproduce the image (following the original process used by scott) completely within Painter. I wasn't going for a 100% accurate reproduction here -- I was more interested in translating the process from the video to digital. This took me somewhere a little over 2 hours.
I wanted to do it without any digital trickery -- one layer, only painting & masks involved, color-mixing done on-canvas, and all texture created from the brushes themselves rather than a texture layer on top.
It's a pretty simple image, but it was fun, relaxing, and educational to do!

You guys should try studies like this too! Digital or traditional! This is a great way to learn things you didn't entirely know how to approach before. For me, this taught me how to be a little more traditional with Corel Painter!
----------------- Now, I know a lot of you know me for doing quite meticulous, well rendered images. Lately you've seen me producing far simpler work -- this study here probably setting off a few alarms among some of you XD I have an interest in simpler art styles such as this, and I want to learn how to do them. I will say this: expect work similar to this from me at points in the future, along with more complex work as well. Broadening horizons!
XD I'll probably be scrapping this later. Just wanted to share
I know this is a copy, but even then I think the atmosphere you managed to create is pretty damn awesome. Sometimes your more well-renndered stuff seems a little too synthetic to me, so I actually like seeing you do these simpler styles.
Don't you dare scrap this! Scott Wills is a damn force of nature - I never realised all the backgrounds were done traditionally in that show :0 not that I ever thought about it at my age. Your rendition looks absolutely enchanting; you really handled the challenge excellently!
